QualificationsDr. HIckman is one of two naturopathic physicians in the NWA area. Naturopathic physicians have special combination training in both conventional and alternative medicine, which uniquely qualifies them to provide "integrative" medicine.
Dr. Hickman received her medical degree from
Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine, in Tempe, AZ.
The 4-year, graduate-level, naturopathic medical program at SCNM trains students to become primary care, naturopathic physicians.
Education includes the same
basic biomedical sciences and laboratory diagnosis found in allopathic medical schools, while
combining education in natural therapeutics such as
clinical nutrition,
botanical medicine, homeopathy, acupuncture, physical medicine,
hydrotherapy, counseling, and others.
The first two years of the program consist of basic medical sciences, followed by basic science national board exams. The following two years are a combination of clinical training and didactic clinical courses.
Clinical education includes over
700 patient contacts and rotations with NDs, DOs and MDs, within a primary care setting. Students must sit for the clinical science board exams to receive their license.
In licensed states, naturopathic physicians are primary care doctors. They can prescribe pharmaceuticals, preform minor surgery, and are covered by some insurance companies.
Although Dr. Hickman see patients of all ages and health concerns, her primary focus during her clinical training was in naturopathic pediatric medicine, especially within the Autism Spectrum Disorders. She is extensively trained in alternative pediatric treatments, including biomedical treatments for ASD. She completed over 500 hours of additional clinical rotations and observation in pediatric medicine.
Dr. Hickman's interest in alternative pediatric treatments led her to begin a dietary/herbal supplement company, Naturopathic Alternatives. The first product, Colic Care, was developed to help with the elusive condition known as "colic". Please visit
All Natural Colic Care for more information on Colic Care and Naturopathic Alternatives.
Dr. Hickman is licensed as a naturopathic physician in Arizona and Kansas, and is a member of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians.
